[1.] One line summary of the problem: kernel: ata1: DMA timeout, stat 0x1 [2.] Full description of the problem/report: I've just purchased a VIA KT600 based mainboard and a Seagate Barracuda 120G SATA drive. The controller and the drive is properly recognized, but after a while, independent of the workload, I get the above error, and the drive bails out. (It's unaccessible from the point I get the message). I've also tried the backport in 2.4.22-ac4, it's a bit more verbose, and complains about a 'scsi Media Sense error' before the dma timeout. [3.] Keywords (i.e., modules, networking, kernel): VIA, SATA [4.] Kernel version (from /proc/version): Linux version 2.6.0-test9 (root@mcree) (gcc version 3.3.2 20030908 (Debian prerelease)) #6 Tue Nov 4 13:11:19 CET 2003 [5.] Output of Oops.. message (if applicable) with symbolic information resolved (see Documentation/oops-tracing.txt) N/A [6.] A small shell script or example program which triggers the problem (if possible) Normal usage. (Sometimes I can cp tens of gigabytes, sometimes I can't even change to a directory) [7.] Environment [7.1.] Software (add the output of the ver_linux script here) Linux mcree 2.6.0-test9 #6 Tue Nov 4 13:11:19 CET 2003 i686 GNU/Linux Gnu C 3.3.2 Gnu make 3.80 util-linux 2.12 mount 2.12 module-init-tools 0.9.15-pre2 e2fsprogs 1.35-WIP Linux C Library 2.3.2 Dynamic linker (ldd) 2.3.2 Procps 3.1.12 Net-tools 1.60 Console-tools 0.2.3 Sh-utils 5.0.90 Modules Loaded [7.2.] Processor information (from /proc/cpuinfo): processor : 0 vendor_id : AuthenticAMD cpu family : 6 model : 8 model name : AMD Athlon(TM) XP 2100+ stepping : 1 cpu MHz : 1734.223 cache size : 256 KB fdiv_bug : no hlt_bug : no f00f_bug : no coma_bug : no fpu : yes fpu_exception : yes cpuid level : 1 wp : yes flags : fpu vme de pse tsc msr pae mce cx8 apic sep mtrr pge mca cmov pat pse36 mmx fxsr sse syscall mmxext 3dnowext 3dnow bogomips : 3416.06 [7.3.] Module information (from /proc/modules): empty [7.4.] Loaded driver and hardware information (/proc/ioports, /proc/iomem) [root@mcree| /usr/src/linux-2.6.0-test9/scripts]#cat /proc/ioports 0000-001f : dma1 0020-0021 : pic1 0040-005f : timer 0060-006f : keyboard 0070-0077 : rtc 0080-008f : dma page reg 00a0-00a1 : pic2 00c0-00df : dma2 00f0-00ff : fpu 0170-0177 : ide1 01f0-01f7 : ide0 0376-0376 : ide1 0378-037a : parport0 03c0-03df : vga+ 03f6-03f6 : ide0 03f8-03ff : serial 0cf8-0cff : PCI conf1 8400-84ff : 0000:00:13.0 8400-84ff : tulip 8800-881f : 0000:00:10.3 9000-901f : 0000:00:10.2 9400-941f : 0000:00:10.1 9800-981f : 0000:00:10.0 a000-a00f : 0000:00:0f.1 a000-a007 : ide0 a008-a00f : ide1 a400-a4ff : 0000:00:0f.0 a400-a4ff : libata a800-a80f : 0000:00:0f.0 a800-a80f : libata b000-b003 : 0000:00:0f.0 b000-b003 : libata b400-b407 : 0000:00:0f.0 b400-b407 : libata b800-b803 : 0000:00:0f.0 b800-b803 : libata d000-d007 : 0000:00:0f.0 d000-d007 : libata d400-d43f : 0000:00:0e.0 d800-d8ff : 0000:00:09.0 [root@mcree| /usr/src/linux-2.6.0-test9/scripts]#cat /proc/iomem 00000000-0009d7ff : System RAM 0009d800-0009ffff : reserved 000a0000-000bffff : Video RAM area 000c0000-000c7fff : Video ROM 000f0000-000fffff : System ROM 00100000-1fffbfff : System RAM 00100000-0034aa64 : Kernel code 0034aa65-004195ff : Kernel data 1fffc000-1fffefff : ACPI Tables 1ffff000-1fffffff : ACPI Non-volatile Storage ea800000-ea8003ff : 0000:00:13.0 ea800000-ea8003ff : tulip eb000000-eb0000ff : 0000:00:10.4 eb800000-eb803fff : 0000:00:09.0 ec000000-edefffff : PCI Bus #01 ec000000-ecffffff : 0000:01:00.0 ee000000-ee000fff : 0000:00:0d.1 ee800000-ee800fff : 0000:00:0d.0 ee800000-ee800fff : bttv0 ef700000-f7ffffff : PCI Bus #01 ef800000-ef87ffff : 0000:01:00.0 f0000000-f7ffffff : 0000:01:00.0 f8000000-fbffffff : 0000:00:00.0 fec00000-fec00fff : reserved fee00000-fee00fff : reserved ffff0000-ffffffff : reserved [7.5.] PCI information ('lspci -vvv' as root) [root@mcree| /usr/src/linux-2.6.0-test9/scripts]#lspci -vvv 00:00.0 Host bridge: VIA Technologies, Inc.
