Subject: Strange process hangs on 2.6.0
Date: Thu, 25 Dec 2003 22:15:56 +0100	[thread overview]
Message-ID: <20031225211556.GA26469@lucash.localdomain> (raw)

Hello Everyone,

I am getting strange process hangs on 2.6.0 (stable). The same problem
also occurred on many of test kernels (all that i checked out).

Problem occurs when i run text-mode emacs using a wrapper script:

runemacs.sh:
#!/bin/sh
emacs -q -nw $*

it happens only if i login to my ordinary user, then switch user to root by
calling:
# su -

and then execute ./runemacs.sh anyfile

emacs draws himself in the terminal but is not responding.
Only SIGKILL manages to terminate it.

The problem magically does not happen if:
1. i directly call emacs -q -nw anyfile (without wrapper script)
2. i precede the command line in wrapper script with exec
3. if i change the root shell from bash to zsh
4. after running emacs without wrapper script the wrapper works fine
too (but only in the same terminal)
5. i call strace ./runemacs.sh anyfile ;)
6. probably many others

I'm not sure if it is really a bug in kernel but it did not happen
when i used 2.4 line.

I'm running PLD linux with home-compiled kernel from www.kernel.org
without any additional patches.

Here follows the info about such hung emacs from /proc:
