Does it work if you do: 

echo "shutdown" > /sys/power/disk
echo "disk" > /sys/power/state

?

You might also try using the hibernate script to handle unloading
modules, etc:

(It can handle softwaresuspend2 or the pmdisk /sys/power/state)
