Subject: PROBLEM: gzip locks while decompressing a particular file when on NFS v.3
Date: Sun, 12 Sep 2004 14:59:23 +0200 [thread overview]
Message-ID: <200409121459.23856.willy@gardiol.org> (raw)
Problem: gzip hangs inside a kernel call when decompressing X430src-3.tgz
(part of xfree86) on a NFS root system.
Full description: When i try to gunzip (or untar with -zx) the X430src-3.tgz
archive (its MD5 checksum is correct) over a NFS mounted filesystem it hangs
at the file
xc/programs/Xserver/XpConfig/C/print/models/SPSPARC2/fonts/AvantGarde-Demi.pmf
every time. The only way to kill the stalled gzip is to reboot. The gunzip
does not use CPU nor much ram. Tha same .tgz correctly decompress on a local
hard drive on the same machine / same config.
keywords: NFS, KERNEL 2.6, NFSROOT, HANG
kernel version: 2.6.8
Trigger: grab that file from xfree86 ftp site and decompress on a NFS mounted
filesystem
Environment:

Workaround: uncompress the file on a local hard drive then copy the files on
the NFS partition. This is not acceptable.
