Dear Folks, After suffering periodic (every 4 hours --3 weeks) hard lockups that do not respond to NMI, Alt-sysrq-x (x as in sysrq.txt), capslock, numlock lights not responsive, under a wide variety of 2.4.x kernels, I have splashed out and bought a Tyan Trinity i875P S5101 motherboard---and found that the Promise PDC20378 chip is only able to support a massive flame war (under "Promise SATA driver GPL'd"), but not yet a reliably working driver! The guy who sold the Tyan board said I could return it, so I need to know: What modern motherboards work well with Linux? What IDE cards work well? ================================================ Problem with hard lockups: I have been using SiliconImage 680 IDE cards to support my 6 IDE hard disks, but I still believe they may be the cause of the hardware problems (many messages like this: Aug 27 00:35:08 nicksbox kernel: hdi: dma_intr: status=0x51 { DriveReady SeekComplete Error } Aug 27 00:35:08 nicksbox kernel: hdi: dma_intr: error=0x84 { DriveStatusError BadCRC } Here is what I am still using, an Asus P4B533-E. $ lspci 00:00.0 Host bridge: Intel Corp. 82845 845 (Brookdale) Chipset Host Bridge (rev 11) 00:01.0 PCI bridge: Intel Corp. 82845 845 (Brookdale) Chipset AGP Bridge (rev 11) 00:1d.0 USB Controller: Intel Corp. 82801DB USB (Hub #1) (rev 01) 00:1d.1 USB Controller: Intel Corp. 82801DB USB (Hub #2) (rev 01) 00:1d.2 USB Controller: Intel Corp. 82801DB USB (Hub #3) (rev 01) 00:1d.7 USB Controller: Intel Corp. 82801DB USB EHCI Controller (rev 01) 00:1e.0 PCI bridge: Intel Corp. 82801BA/CA/DB PCI Bridge (rev 81) 00:1f.0 ISA bridge: Intel Corp. 82801DB ISA Bridge (LPC) (rev 01) 00:1f.1 IDE interface: Intel Corp. 82801DB ICH4 IDE (rev 01) 01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation NV11 [GeForce2 MX/MX 400] (rev b2) 02:03.0 Multimedia audio controller: C-Media Electronics Inc CM8738 (rev 10) 02:04.0 FireWire (IEEE 1394): NEC Corporation: Unknown device 00f2 (rev 01) 02:08.0 Ethernet controller: Intel Corp. 82801BD PRO/100 VE (LOM) Ethernet Controller (rev 81) 02:0a.0 RAID bus controller: CMD Technology Inc PCI0680 (rev 01) 02:0b.0 RAID bus controller: CMD Technology Inc PCI0680 (rev 01) 02:0c.0 SCSI storage controller: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] 53c974 [PCscsi] (rev 10) 02:0d.0 Ethernet controller: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd.
