How about rename current WRITE_ASS to __WRITE_ASS and create a wrapper
WRITE_ASS like this:
#define WRITE_ASS(field, fmt) __WRITE_ASS(field, fmt, attr->field)
and use __WRITE_ASS for 'optional'.
