Hans produced loadlin1.6c for Pat Volkerding, about slack 8.1 time
(kernel 2.4.18). I'm sure he'd rise to the challenge to update for 2.6
if needed. 
And...
I've just tried loadlin1.6c on a 2.6.2 kernel and it's come up fine
