I am attempting to upgrade my system (SuSE 9.1 Professional distribution) from kernel 2.6.10. I initially tried kernel 2.6.11.6. However, the system "freezes" during boot when the console is redirected to the serial port. I have tried booting with kernels 2.6.11.6, 2.6.11.7, and 2.6.12-rc3. This behavior is not observed with 2.6.10. Also, the system boots correctly with 2.6.11.[67] if I boot using the built-in video card and keyboard. However, the problem can be reproduced on a development system. While it can "freeze" at various places, it most often freezes at: kjournald starting. Commit interval 5 seconds EXT3 FS on md1, internal journal EXT3-fs: mounted filesystem with ordered data mode. selinux_register_security: Registering secondary module capability Capability LSM initialized as secondary Adding 1052216k swap on /dev/hde1. Priority:42 extents:1 Adding 1052216k swap on /dev/hdg1. Priority:42 extents:1 At this point, the system will sit for hours with no activity. Also, the system never initializes the network or other software during this period. However, pressing any key on an attached console will allow additional text to appear. For example, pressing made the following appear: /dev/md1 on /va Pressing again displays: r/lib/mysql typ If I hold down the key, the boot will proceed normally until I see a login prompt. At this point, everything seems to function normally (MySQL, Apache, etc). If I stop at any point, the boot process immediately freezes again. Intermittently, it will continue booting for several lines of output before freezing. The system is a Tyan Transport GX28 (B2882) with the supplied Thunder K8S Pro (S2882) motherboard, 4 GB of ram and two AMD Opteron 242 processors. Our hard drives (software mirrored ST3120026AS disks) are attached to a HighPoint RocketRAID 1640 (HPT374) controller (we experienced instability with the motherboard's builtin SATA controller). The development system is identical except that it has 2 GB RAM and software mirrored WDC WD2500JD-00GBB0 disks. The grub boot command is: title Linux kernel (hd0,1)/boot/vmlinuz root=/dev/hde2 vga=0x314 splash=silent console=tty0 console=ttyS0,38400n8 resume=/dev/hde1 showopts initrd (hd0,1)/boot/initrd Please see the attached documents for the 2.6.12-rc3 configuration and output from 'lspci -vv'. Any ideas on how to correct or troubleshoot the issue?
