Hi,

We have been seeing intermittent early-boot guest hangs in our CI for 
some time. Guests stop making serial progress during the first few 
seconds after SMP bring-up - no panic, no oops, no other error messages 
the vm just hangs.

The issue appears strongly tied to high vCPU count: we reproduce with
smp=255 and have not seen it on smaller guests in the same CI matrix.


We bisected the guest kernel between a known-good v7.0 and known-bad
v7.1-rc1 using git bisect + KVM reboot stress (5 guests,
smp=255, 500 parallel reboots).

First bad: 763aacf86f1baefb134c70813aa8c72d1675d738 "clocksource:
Rewrite watchdog code completely"
Good parent: 1432f9d4e8aa2d7585b678bdd0b740597af00d6e "clocksource:
Don't use non-continuous clocksources as watchdog" (= 763aacf8^,
immediate parent)


Environment

Hypervisor: QEMU/KVM on bare metal (Intel and AMD hosts)

Guests: 5 VMs each 255 vCPUs, 44GB RAM
Guest kernel: 7.0.0-rc1+ at 763aacf8 (bad); parent at 1432f9d4 (good)

Boot path: direct kernel boot (-kernel bzImage), serial console only
Workload: boot + serial login + reboot loop

Boot progresses through SMP bring-up and into early initcalls
Serial then goes silent ~1–2s after boot
The exact stuck initcall varies by timing (e.g. sha1_mod_init,
activate_jump_labels, sock_init) — not always the same function:


Workaround for this is to boot Guest with kernel cmdline:
tsc=nowatchdog. With that, the same CI setup completed 1000 reboot
iterations on both Intel and AMD hosts with zero hangs.

I have attached below logs:

amd-vm4-qemu-cmd.txt
amd-vm4-serial-excerpt.log
amd-vm4-crash-excerpt.txt
guest_kconfig-excerpt Relevant guest .config options 
(clocksource/TSC/SMP/KVM guest). Full .config available on request.

Intel host shows the same hang pattern (sha1_mod_init path); full 
serial/crash and untrimmed logs available on request as they are big in 
size.
