Hmm.. This was fixed in -mm back in February
(http://www.ussg.iu.edu/hypermail/linux/kernel/0602.1/2022.html). 
Not sure why it hasn't flowed in to mainline. Does this patch below (against 
2.6.18-rc1) fix it?
