I have a built-in "memory stick" reader on my vaio laptop and I recently
tried to read a "memory stick pro" stick. I got this messages in the

I was curious to know if the 128Mo limitation is tied to the hardware or
the software and how much differ these two formats... would it be
possible to read a "memory stick pro" stick with a "memory stick" reader
????

Memory stick pro needs a special reader. If your reader supports
memory stick pro it most likely has something to that effect printed
on it, or in the documentation. I've no idea whether the reader in
the vaio laptop supports memory stick pro, but your errors suggest
that it perhaps does not.

My reader is certainly not "pro", but I was hoping that we could twist
the hardware to read something on "pro" sticks...
Does somebody know the specifications of "pro" and "not pro" and how
much they do differ ? (or just where to find the specifications)

After some small investigation, it seems that:
« Some products in some categories (PC, PDA) will be able to accept
Memory Stick PRO media by upgrading firmware or software. (Available
advantage is high capacity only.) »

Moreover, on this page:

I can see that Vaio laptop similar to mine (C1MW and C1MWP) can be
upgraded to read Memory stick Pro...
So, I guess that it is possible. But why is the Linux driver refusing it
?
I'll try this out.
PS: Who is the maintainer of the Memory Stick driver ?

You need to upgrade the firmware of the memory stick reader. Sony
provides software to do that, which runs under Windows.
I have done this, and Linux successfully can read pro sticks.
