I don't think this really is correct.
Anything that does that "get_stagger()" thing should already either be
tied to a specific CPU (because it's going to actually touch the variables
for "that CPU"), or it should likely set up the data structures for _all_
cases.
Just as an example, look at something like "p4_setup_ctrs()": it will use
that stagger to determine what MSR to read. But if we are preemptable, the
CPU we actually do the MSR read on may be a _different_ CPU than the CPU
that we did the "get_stagger()" on!
So I really think that protecting against preemption inside of
"get_stagger()" is fundamentally buggy. Because if you need it, then by
the time you return the value from the function, the value has now lost
all meaning because you might have preempted to another CPU after doing
the put_cpu().
So I think the "get_cpu()/put_cpu()" should be done around the whole
sequence (ie from before "get_stagger()" to after the stagger has been
used to initialize some data structures or do wrmsr/rdmsr calls.
Of course, this is all ancient code, so whatever. But I really think this
patch is actively bad - it just hides the issue rather than fixing
anything.

Most of the functions are called preempt off anyway. The only one
which needs care AFAICT is p4_fill_in_addresses, but the problem space
is outside of the p4 specific code. It's the call site which is
nmi_setup():
model->fill_in_addresses(&per_cpu(cpu_msrs, 0));
...
on_each_cpu(nmi_cpu_setup, NULL, 1);
Need to have a closer look which parts of that section need to be
preempt off.

And that code has nested calls to get_stagger() via pmc_setup_one_p4_counter().
That is odd as well. Why evaluate that twice ? So there are more
things to look at before we just fix^Whide some debug warning.

And the proposed follow up patch is even worse as it just adds
mechanical band aids all over the place without analysing where the
root cause of the problem is.

Hm, you only seem to be looking at solving that warning message, and
your interest does not seem to go outside of that scope at all. Your
first fix was to make the message go away, your second fix minimally
(tried to address) the review from Linus and did a mechanic change
to make the message go away.
This second change was actually subtly worse than the first one:
because it spread the uncleanliness elsewhere. The getting of
'stagger' is in no way central to the code, it does not denote
critical sections at all.
It is an internal detail that should not matter to preemptability.
Now you changed it to get/put the preemption count, but the code was
not improved at all - we just got more churn.
The real fix would be to go to the right abstraction level and
realize how these MSRs are set up by the oprofile code, and put all
the MSR reads and writes into one non-preempt section.
Could you please test the patch below? (Totally untested and
everything.) Please dont just check whether the warning went away,
but also whether Oprofile still works correctly on your P4/HT box.
I would not be surprised if this patch was a Oprofile fix for HT
P4's where two CPU siblings share the PMU resources - but i dont
have the hardware to test it.
Robert, Thomas, what do you think?
Thanks,
Ingo

This warning at first sight looks like a false positive - the call
to p4_fill_in_addresses() does not have to be preemptible in itself:
we set up MSR parameters of one of the CPUs, which parameters are
symmetric on all CPUs so this function can be called on any other CPU.
But the 'stagger' value depends on the _current_ CPU's value, so here
we set up CPU0's stagger to the wrong value ... 50% of the time.
This code is fragile for another reason as well: should we ever rely
on running on the CPU whole MSR parameters we are changing this code
could break.
So put the whole MSR parametering and setup loop(s) in nmi_setup()
under a single get_cpu()/put_cpu() critical section, and change the
'0' hack to this_cpu.

btw. - and this is a pet peeve of mine - in the x86 tree we never
ever "fix" warnings.
Warnings can only be dealt with in two ways correctly:
- Fix _false positive_ warnings - carefully analyzing and
explaining why the warning is a false positive.
- .. or by fixing _real bugs_, which bugs some warning mechanism
exposed. The warning there does not need to be 'fixed' - it was
the canary for a real bug and we fix the _bug_, not the warning.
( the warning does go away but only as a side-effect of the bug
going away. )
The moment you start 'fixing warnings' (and i note here that you
seem to be interested in doing many such changes and cleanups, so we
better talk about this fine distinction), you risk the exact pattern
that happened above:
... something subtle happened somewhere - and you sent a patch that
you denoted as a 'fix' in the subject line. Your commit log did not
show at all whether you understood the full context, and you did not
analyze the _reason_ for the warning, at all.
I routinely reject such patches, just based on that pattern, even if
i happen to agree with the change.
They are in fact _actively harmful_, because a poor overworked
maintainer like me might apply it in a weak moment. [ except Linus,
who is overworked and still notices such patches but what's new ;-) ]
Instead, if you see such warnings, and dont know why they trigger -
please send in the message denoted as a bug report. Or if you have a
guess of a patch but are unsure about a change in any way send in an
RFC patch and _declare_ the bits you are sure about and the bits you
are unsure about, and ask specific questions and show how far you
got in the analysis. It is not a problem to declare the area you
dont understand - it is useful information to those reading your
emails. Conversely, the _lack_ of such information is harmful. Ok?
Please dont _ever_ send in patches without a meaningful changelog.
Take this as a warning! ;-)

This fixed the warning, thanks :-)
oprofile is still not working properly may be because of F10 update
issues:
Stopping profiling.
