Hi,

The following oops looks a lot like Tomas Szepe oops, so I copied the
subject.

I could still login with ssh, su to root and issue a reboot, which
didn't work completely, but after a halt command I got the bootprompt
on the console and issued a boot. Other commands as ps or top didn't
work. ls did work. It happened under heavy load. The machine was running
for more than one day with this load.

It is a sparc 5, single processor , 128MB.

Joris. (cc me plz)

I assume this is indeed the well-known SRMMU bug. It's very easy to
reproduce actually, just stress the machine so that the load reaches
20+. For a temporary and imperfect solution, look up the relevant
thread on the aurora sparc mailing list.

Someone is supposed to have been working on a fix for some time now.

Bad news, everyone. I'm definitely able to reproduce the very same fatal oops
on a UP kernel as well. Couldn't find a SPARC32 equivalent of i386's "nosmp,"
so I was forced to recompile the kernel (2.4.18-rc4) with CONFIG_SMP undefined
and do a "serious test" anyway.

Running something like the following kills the machine flat:

#!/bin/sh
i=0; while [ ! "$i" = "500" ]; do
	/bin/echo testmail.| /bin/mail -s test autoreply@localhost
	i=$(/usr/bin/expr $i + 1)
done

For a ksymoops decode of the oops in question and more, please look up my
former post in this thread.

Looks like it's back to 2.2 for all SPARC/Linux users for the time being.

Right, good point. I'll boot the machine nosmp and try to reproduce the
oops over the weekend.

> I'm convinced that there are evils still lurking in SMP after all these

trouble is, I have no idea whether the bug is present in earlier
2.4 kernels as well without me noticing, or if it's a relatively
new thing (Sure I could check, but it's not like I can reproduce
the oops in under an hour or so of trying: that's what I meant by
"more-or-less-deterministically" :D).

Assuming that you can handle your load, at least briefly, with a single
CPU, have you tried booting with 'nosmp' on this machine? A serious test
would build without SMP to get the whole locking stuff to go away, but
this is quick and dirty.

I'm convinced that there are evils still lurking in SMP after all these
years.

Hi David and everybody else on lkml,

The following oops is more-or-less-deterministically reproducible
on my dual-processor SPARCstation 10 with 160MB RAM. It tends to send
the system down under heavy load caused by either sendmail/procmail
or apache. I first came across the bug at around 2.4.17, though it's
probably been lurking in the kernel much longer. I've gone through
quite a bit of trouble attempting to get the oops barf at me in 2.2.x
in case it's my hw config that's behind the whole problem, but I haven't
run into any breakdowns, 2.2.21-rc2 included.

I'm willing to provide as much support as I can to anyone who finds
the issue important enough to try to fix it -- for me, at present,
it efficiently renders the 2.4 branch unusable on my 24-7 server
(which is rather inconvenient as I have trouble finding an alternative
to iptables).

After the oops occurs, the machine is in a state where:

    o All memory is exhausted, yet no processes get killed
       (I haven't got a clue as to where all the memory goes).
    o System load is constantly rising.
    o Most processes are impossible to run (sh won't fork them),
       but somehow I've always been able to ssh in and issue a reboot
       after a while of trying.
    o The system can only be rebooted via /sbin/reboot -f -n (god
       bless ext3!), as it appears that sync() won't go through.

Enclosed please find the oops decode from ksymoops 2.4.5 as well
as an inline copy of the corresponding 2.4.18-rc4 '.config'. Should
you need more information, please don't hesitate to ask for it.

bye,
Tomas (I'm not subscribed to the list, make sure to CC me!)
