I'm stumped, really. Try building it INTO the kernel (ie Y instead of
M.) This is what I did and it works. Or maybe you should get XFree86
4.2.1, which is what I have: 

XFree86 Version 4.2.1.1 (Debian 4.2.1-4 20021123003806
branden@debian.org) / X Window System

Hope things work out.
