I don't know if this should be considered a Red Hat problem or a kernel
problem, but here it is anyway.
With kernel 2.5.67 or 2.5-bk-current and Red Hat 9, if I try to do a
graphical log out from either KDE or Gnome, the test machine locks up
hard, not responding to pings, or alt-sysrq-anything. (and yes,
/proc/sys/kernel/sysrq is 1 and I "fixed" /etc/sysctl.conf, line 13)
The same lockup happens with ctrl-alt-backspace from KDE or Gnome.
Doing an /sbin/init 3 works fine. Harsh way to log out however.
Subsequent cycles of startx and graphical "Log Out" do _not_ lock up
the box, but work just fine.
Needless to say, with the vendor kernel, everything works perfectly.
Alt-sysrq-various behaves as expected. Ctrl-alt-backspace does not
lock up the box.
If I get time, I'll try some older 2.5.x kernels to see if this is a
recently introduced behavior.

.config? Are you using Framebuffer console support?

No. CONFIG_FB is set, but none of the CONFIG_FB_X are set.
Output of grep ^CONFIG .config at end of message.
I also tried 2.5.67-ac1 which behaves the same as above, and
2.5.67-mm1 which does not hang, but reboots. Adding akpm to
the cc-list since -mm1 behaves a little differently than the rest.
I replaced id:5:initdefault: with id:3:initdefault: in /etc/inittab
and that made the lockups go away with 2.5.67-[bk,ac1,mm1].
I usually have that setup (initial runlevel 3) anyway, so it was only an
accident that I chose "Start X Window System at Boot" during the RH9
install. Otherwise, I would have never seen this problem.
FWIW, here is the .config for 2.5-bk:

Sorry, that last statement was a little vague. I usually start X
with "startx", and that works fine with everything. Hitting "Log Out"
kills X and gets me back to run level 3. However, if I do a
/sbin/init 5, log in with the graphical login and then hit "Log Out",
the 2.5.67-[bk,ac1] kernels lock up and -mm1 reboots.

Something seems to have gone bad with AGP and/or DRM and/or radeon lately.
Try disabling AGP and/or DRM in config.

I first tried -mm1 with AGP disabled, but when I did /sbin/init 5, I got
into a dialog about selecting a different X server, so I elected not to
do that right now. I re-enabled AGP and disabled DRM, and -mm1 rebooted
as before when "Log Out" was selected. As a preliminary test, I had
started X with startx, and that worked fine on logout as before.
Sorry, but I'm running out of time for more testing today. I'll try
again tomorrow when I have more time.
