2.5.68{,-bk1,-bk2} refuses to boot

Hey,

topic says it all
blank screen after grub loads the kernel

manually added keith owens' videochar patch to init/main.c, and still get 
no output

i have _no_ idea how to diagnose further
#kernelnewbies isn't responding

2.5.67 works fine

any extra info on request, of course

You possibly forgot CONFIG_INPUT=y and CONFIG_VT=y or so...

Nope

both are =y in the .config

the only _changed_ config item from my working .57 to my non-working .58 
(aside from new config entries which are unset) is CONFIG_DEVPTS_FS=y, 
because of my devfs usage
