I'm having a problem with a usb printer that sometimes is there and sometimes
it isn't. I'm suspecting something in the usb support, maybe usblp but the
problem is somewhat nebulous.
Current kernel being used is 2.6.9 with the ck2 patchset on a gentoo based
system. The problem has been occurring through various earlier kernels as
well.
The printer in question is an HP3700 Color LaserJet.
All of the other usb devices continue to work, even another usb printer, an HP
DeskJet.
Logic sort of points to the printer but HP has basically replaced the guts of
the printer. And when the service call was made the printer wasn't working
yet started to work the night before the HP technician arrived and continued
to work for several weeks after (until now).
When it stops working there is no sure way to get to start again. A reboot
(system or printer or both), for example, doesn't necessarily work. In fact
I've found no way to get it to work except wait until "it wants to".
The output of 'lsusb' and 'lsusb -v' look identical whether or not the printer
works or doesn't, 'cat /proc/bus/usb/devices' looks normal and 'ls
-l /dev/usb' shows the device as lp1
However, when it's not working, the CUPS command 'lpinfo -v' displays "direct
usb://Unknown" and sending some text directly to /dev/usb/lp1 results in no
output (/dev/usb/lp0 is the DeskJet and output is normal).
Any help troubleshooting this issue is much appreciated.
