Which dies at boot before writing /var/log/messages. So I tried my slab debug
12.3 and of course I changed other things in the config (it was a generic
include-everything config so I trimmed some stuff out) and now its rock solid! :-/
I don't have a copy of the ooopsing 12.3 config (I forgot to change the name
when I made the debugging one). Is it worth my looking at this or is 12.3
falling too far behind? I see 2.6.13rc5 is out now...

OK thanks. I think I'll also switch to 2.6.14rc4 just in case it's something that's
already been fixed. Am compiling a slab debug 2.6.14rc4 now...

ABIT IC7, sorry I should have mentioned it.
It happens even if I never run mplayer. The video capturing is what is new,
previously the system was pretty stable.

Let me guess: A VIA mainboard?
If yes, check for files with the first four bytes replaces by garbage
while/after watching TV. If you find some, we've got the same problem.

The no_overlay module option might help, if it were actually implemented.
(I could not find reads from the corresponding variable.)

You might want to enable slab debugging. Here's how,
run "make menuconfig"
Select "Kernel hacking"
turn on "Kernel debugging"
and turn on "Debug memory allocations"

Seems to be triggered by mplayer but not right away (30 minutes sometimes), sometimes
no mplayer is necessary.
This is a busy machine. There is continuous usb soundcard (3 soundcards) and
usb ethernet activity (news server and alot of downloading) and video is being
read continuously from the bt878 card.
Any suggestions for workarounds are greatly appreciated. I'm going to try running
with swap off and see if that helps.
Please let me know of any debugging/testing that I can help you with.
