Subject: [PATCH v5 28/29] selftests/sched: Test SCHED_DEADLINE bandwidth across a root domain rebuild
Date: Sun, 8 Nov 2026 13:54:05 -0500	[thread overview]
Message-ID: <20261108185406.1549770-29-mathieu.desnoyers@efficios.com> (raw)
In-Reply-To: <20261108185406.1549770-1-mathieu.desnoyers@efficios.com>

A task that leaves SCHED_DEADLINE, or dies, keeps its bandwidth until
its 0-lag time. No selftest checks what happens to this bandwidth
meanwhile.

Add deadline_rebuild_test, with three cases. In each case, a task of
400ms every second runs 380ms, then leaves SCHED_DEADLINE. Its 0-lag
time is then about 570ms ahead. P is a partition root of one CPU.
Before the 0-lag time:
- dies_before_rebuild: the task exits in P. Then a second partition
root is made, which rebuilds the accounting of every root domain.
- switched_out_before_rebuild: the same, but the task switches to
  SCHED_OTHER and sleeps in P.
- moved_after_switch_out: the task switches to SCHED_OTHER outside P.
Then it moves into P and dies there.

After the 0-lag time, P must admit one task of 600ms every second, and
refuse a second one with EBUSY. A kernel with the bug removes the
bandwidth from P's root domain at the 0-lag time. But the rebuild
dropped it already, or P never had it. total_bw then wraps around, and
P admits both tasks.

The test skips without root, 3 CPUs, the cgroup v2 cpuset controller or
deadline admission control. Admission control is off when
sched_rt_runtime_us is -1.

On v7.4-rc1, in 8-CPU VMs, the three cases fail. "sched/deadline: Keep
departing bandwidth across a root domain rebuild" fixes them. With the
whole series, the three cases pass, with and without PREEMPT_RT.
