aic7xxx lockup for SMP for 2.4.22

Hi

Recent postings on this suggest some changes/problems with
aic7xxx, but none of them seems to be like this.

It seems that the aic7xxx driver while booting a SMP enabled
2.4.22 kernel waits (lock-up?) forever.

The lock-up does not happen if I disable SMP, make distclean
and recompile the kernel.

The controller used is a PCI based Adaptec 29160 (aic7892).

The board is a dual Pentium III DBD100 from Iwill.

Compiler GCC 3.2.3
Distro : Slackware 9.1

Has anyone else seen this ?

Hi

More info on the subject. It turns out that a 2.4.22 kernel
without SMP-support but with IO-APIC enabled will also lock-up/stop
when it installs the aic7xxx driver upon boot. Disabling the IO-APIC
and disabling SMP-support makes the kernel boot normally.

How about UP and IO-APIC?

Assuming UP means uni-processor, do you then mean removing
one of the processors or just disabling (ie. not enabling) SMP ?

The latter case (enabling IO-APIC and disabling SMP) makes the
boot process halt when it come to activating the aic7xxx driver.

Thanks that's what i wanted to find out, which 2.4 kernel version does it 
work with?

Hmmm ...... It has worked with 2.4.20 ..... but I just went
through many hardware and software updates and replacements and I
can't (hardware replaced) go back and verify everything ... so I can't
really give you a reliable answer here.

I can try to install everything again in a way that will make it fail
with 2.4.22 and then download and install older versions until it
works again, but that will be a tedious process that will take
many hours of work. Maybe, but only maybe, I'll do it, but only
if you find it VERY useful.

No, if you have a suitable workaround, stick with it.

I've got a 2.4.21 system running SMP, PIII Xeon, booting off AIC7890,
using AIC7880, and another 2940 (I think) along with a pair of 120gb
drives on the IDE controllers.  It's working quite nicely, and I'm
planning on moving to 2.4.22 soon as well.

My system has the Intel GX chipset, what does yours have?  I've also
turned off ACPI in the bios, but I do have:

  CONFIG_X86_IO_APIC=y
  CONFIG_X86_LOCAL_APIC=y
  CONFIG_X86_GOOD_APIC=y

in my config.  Maybe it's a chipset issue you're seeing?

Not sure i can do that - must check.

To be a little bit more detailed, in the PC are installed the following

   a) AGP Matrox 400 or 450
   b) PCI 3c95x
   c) PCI Adaptec 29160
   c) PCI bttv WinTV
   e) Free
   f) ISA pnp Winmodem
   g) ISA pnp SB16

Yes, it's an old machine ;-)

Anyway, removing all but the AGP card and moving the controller to slot b)
and then installing the cards as

   a) AGP Matrox 400 or 450
   b) PCI Adaptec 29160
   c) PCI 3c95x
   d) PCI bttv WinTV
   e) Free
   f) ISA pnp SB16
   g) ISA pnp Winmodem

cures the problem both with and without SMP and IO-APIC enabled.
So far so good for me. I suspect some how there was an undetected
IRQ/ISA/PCI problem, but that still mean that the driver can work
well with the IO-APIC disabled while hanging when IO-APIC enabled.

If anybody want's to persue this, I'd be happy to reproduce
the error.
