Works for me, but I don't see a lot of benefit from it. Actually I see
two disadvantages of the patch:
- Without the patch, the choice of y/m/n for a subsystem and the help
text is put aside into the submenu. I find this current layout simpler
and quieter.
- There are two out-of-tree FireWire drivers for special purposes (one
bus sniffer, one remote debugging aid) which might perhaps be candidates
for integration into mainline. These drivers do not use the ieee1394
base driver. (They just don't need to.) With your patch, disabling the
subsystem menu would not only disable the subsystem core driver (which
is correct) but would also hide the choice for such extra drivers which
do not need the core driver. Or vice versa, enabling the submenu would
enable the core driver, even though not all subsystem choices need the
core driver.
The latter point could be worked around by creating an extra hidden
option for the core driver which is SELECTed by the subsystem drivers
which need it. But this would put the user out of control and would
clash with the fact that there are further configuration options for the
core driver itself.
(Sorry if these things were already discussed when you posted the patch
before, I missed that.)

This kind of patch can certainly be integrated as one big chunk. However
the points I made above are more valid for some subsystems than others.
