* [PATCH net 0/4] bnge: Fix error-path and IRQ setup bugs in probe/open

2026-10-05 12:17 ` [PATCH net 1/4] bnge: fix NULL deref in bnge_alloc_core() on failure Bhargava Marreddy

Four independent fixes for existing bugs in the bnge driver's probe/open
path:

[1/4] Unwind bnge_alloc_core() incrementally to avoid a NULL deref when an
       allocation fails.
 [2/4] Require aux_msix + min vectors so nq_nr_rings cannot end up 0.
[3/4] Treat an irq_set_affinity_hint() failure as a warning, not an open
       failure.
[4/4] Clear bd->netdev when bnge_netdev_alloc() fails so it does not
       point at a freed net_device.

Bhargava Marreddy (4):
bnge: fix NULL deref in bnge_alloc_core() on failure
bnge: require NQ vectors beyond aux reservation
bnge: do not fail open if IRQ affinity hint fails
bnge: clear bd->netdev on allocation failure

bnge_alloc_core() previously jumped to a single error label that called
bnge_free_core() to unwind. However, bnge_free_core() assumes a fully
initialized state and dereferences rx/tx ring arrays unconditionally.
If ring allocations fail early, this causes a near-NULL dereference.

Introduce a standard goto ladder to unwind only the resources that were
successfully allocated, preventing NULL dereferences.

If exactly aux_msix vectors are granted, probe continues with zero NQ
vectors. This leads to zero-sized allocations and out-of-bounds array
accesses during ring setup.

Require at least 'min' vectors beyond the aux reservation to ensure the
driver always has an NQ vector to work with.

IRQ affinity hints are advisory and not fatal to driver operations.
On uniprocessor builds (CONFIG_SMP=n), irq_set_affinity_hint() always
returns -EINVAL, which currently prevents ndo_open() from succeeding.

Log a warning and continue instead of failing open on affinity error.

If bnge_netdev_alloc() fails after storing the net_device pointer in
bd->netdev, it calls free_netdev() but leaves bd->netdev as a dangling
pointer.

Explicitly set bd->netdev to NULL on the error path to prevent potential
use-after-free or invalid pointer dereferences.

Hi!

This is an automated message. This series looks like a fix, but its
commit messages seem to be missing some information:

 - How the issue was discovered, e.g. hit in production, hit during
development, syzbot report, manual code inspection, LLM or static
   analysis tool scan.

 - Whether the issue was actually triggered, or is only theoretical
(e.g. found by code inspection). If it was triggered please include
the symptoms, like the stack trace or error messages.

 - What hardware the change was tested on. For driver fixes please
mention the device (and if relevant firmware version) used for
testing, or say that the change was not tested on real hardware.

Please do not repost the series just to address the above. Instead,
reply to this email with the missing information, so that reviewers
can take it into account. If the series needs another revision for
other reasons, please include the information in the commit messages
then.

The evaluation is done by an LLM so it may be wrong, if you think
that is the case please reply and explain.

Hi,

To provide the requested context for reviewers:

- Discovery: Identified during review of the "bnge: Support async
events while down" series -- three were flagged by Sashiko, and one
  was flagged by Simon Horman.

- Trigger: Identified via code review and static analysis (potential
issues in failure handling and IRQ setup paths).

- Testing: Tested on physical bnge hardware; compile-tested and
  verified checkpatch --strict clean.

Regards,
Bhargava, Marreddy.
