I have a HP Pavilion dv6000 laptop here which doesn't boot with
latest Linus tree (2.6.27-rc5).
The last lines I see on the screen are:

o doesn't boot with 2.6.27-rc1
o 2.6.27-rc1 and current kernel boots if I pass hpet=disable at the
command-line

Now, what puzzles me though is that if you do:
$ git checkout -b bla aa276e1cafb3ce9d01d1e837bcd67e92616013ac
and edit the Makefile you will see that it is a 2.6.26-rc4
kernel! When I saw this I thought 'wth? git bisect went backwards?'
(I specified 2.6.26 as good and 2.6.27-rc1 as bad).
I don't know if this is known (it should be) but it seems that you
have changed the Makefile during the merge of that commit... But
I'm quite sure that this commit has been introduced in 2.6.27-rc1.
I would try to revert it from current Linus' tree to see if it
really fix the problem but turns out that it will take some time
to work on the conflicts.
I'm attaching the 2.6.26.3 (Mandriva kernel) and 2.6.27-rc5 (with
hpet=disable) dmesg files.
Also, this _seems_ to be the same as reported in:
http://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=11191
But I'm still compiling the kernel with the appropriate config
options to confirm this.
Please, let me know if there's anything else I can do to
help you debug this.

That's because the commit happened in the x86 git tree after
2.6.26-rc4. In fact you checked out the branch of the x86 git tree
where the commit happened.

Yes, it was merged into Linus tree after 2.6.26 and before
2.6.27-rc1. That's how git works. It keeps track from which point a
particular commit descended. If you look at the git tree with gitk,
then you will see the various points where a particular branch was
split off from Linus tree and when it was merged back.
Nothing to worry about.

Don't do that. We really need to find out what the root cause of this
HPET wreckage on those AMD machine is. The commit in question _IS_ the

I'm not sure if it's related, but I have similar problems with
CONFIG_NO_HZ and CONFIG_HIGH_RES_TIMERS. With the second one, the kernel
shoot a kernel panic during the boot and with both enabled or with
CONFIG_NO_HZ only crash after a while.
I have this bug from 2.5.25 and works if I boot with hpet=disable. If I
have some time this week will try a bisect.

I don't think it's the same bug because the bug we're talking about
can only be triggered after 2.6.27-rc1.
Can you attach your lspci -vv and you cpuinfo so that I check whether
I have the same machine here?

Venki found a nasty bug in the clock events code which might be
related to this. I found one as well. Can you please apply the combo
of those fixes to current mainline and test it ?

Same problem, with or without CONFIG_HPET enabled.
You think the problem you are discussing with Linus - the TSC
calibration issue - may have anything to do with this?
I'm going to trace where the kernel is getting stuck... If you
have any better suggestion, please, just say.

Yes. That was the only point, where a hard hang could happen.

Hmm, so we fail to force program that HPET with the standard minimum
delta.
I now see why this is happening and it is happening only on systems
with a fast HPET. Your's running 25MHz, so the delta is only 1.92
usec. I was staring at lots of those bugreports without noticing the
frequency.
Sigh. The idea to take a fixed number of HPET cycles as the minimum
was not really brilliant it seems.
Does the patch below help ? Keep the debug patch applied, as we can
see whether the check triggers or not.

Works for me... I'm just got only second backtrace after mounting rootfs.

Is the box continuing to work after that warning/backtrace ? This is
still on the x86 git tree, right ? Please verify whether mainline
(linus git tree) has the same problem.

I've just tried 2.6.27-rc5 vanilla with two your patches. It works as
expected without any kind of warnings/backtraces.
Not attaching dmesg, because it's just clean. If you need it, please
download from:

If this patch will be commited to mainline, bug #11101 can be closed as
fixed.

Well, we better find out what's wrong in the x86 tree _before_ it hits
2.6.28. So please keep the bug open, so we don't have to reopen it
after 2.6.28-rc1. This IPI warning needs to be anaylsed.

Actually kernel continued to boot, however it panics just before (or maybe
after) mounting rootfs... I've booted it with boot_delay to take photos.

Ok. The second one is a WARNING as well. That's a separate issue. The
broadcast code tries to send an IPI to a CPU which is not online. Urgh.

Can you please try mainline with all the hpet patches applied ?

Did not work, also tried with latest Linus tree (which has
the fix for the TSC problem) but also failed.
