* [PATCH] Generic HDLC patch for 2.5.3

[-- Attachment #1: Type: text/plain, Size: 745 bytes --]

Hi,

The attached file updates Linux 2.5.3 generic HDLC, please apply.

The patch includes:
- new SIOCDEVICE ioctl for setting all protocol and hardware parameters
of (HDLC) network devices, instead of using PRIVATE netdev ioctls
  (details in hdlc.h and respective hdlc_*.c and/or N2 + C101 drivers)
- the HDLC code is now split into hdlc_generic.c, hdlc_fr.c,
  hdlc_cisco.c etc. files,
- all protocol parameters (timeouts etc.) are (should/aim) now configurable
  via SIOCDEVICE ioctl,
- other updates and bugfixes,
- farsync update from Bob Dunlop,
- dscc4 update from Francois Romieu.

There is binary and source incompatibility with 2.4 version
- users require new sethdlc utility.

Thank you.

Linus,

Please revert, or do not apply, this patch.

ftp://ftp.pm.waw.pl/pub/linux/hdlc/experimental/hdlc-2.5.3.patch.gz

It adds undiscussed networking changed which I very much doubt DaveM
would approve of, and I do not approve of: SIOCDEVICE is far too
generic for inclusion, and it adds a structure for passing untyped
data which is very definitely non-portable.

You need a very generic structure for WAN interfaces because they have
ridiculously large numbers of configurable options. These changes were
discussed over a year ago.

I agree with the comment about untyped data. That does want to be cleaned
up a chunk more.

Ok... SIOC[GS]WANDEVICE or somesuch?

It could be made more portable and still say generic, IMHO.

I like. This patch much improves things.

"SIOCDEVICE" as a constant is unacceptable, so it would need to be
SIOCWANDEVICE or something similar.

SIOCETHTOOL, for example, is an ioctl which actually provides
sub-ioctls, so that is probably a good model to follow.

More comments after I return from New York, and can review these at
length...

	Jeff

Actually that's what hdlc patch does: SIOCDEVICE is the main ioctl with
sub-ioctl IF_IFACE_SYNC_SERIAL, IF_GET_PROTO, IF_PROTO_{RAW/CISCO/FR/PPP/X25}.

Regarding SIOCETHTOOL, is netdev_ethtool_ioctl() weak typing a work in
progress ?

Try #2:
- what about SIOCWANDEV ?
- drivers updated

Well, I was probably under impression it should be used for Ethernet
as well (see the Dec 2000 thread)... Now I think I know people
using Ethernet (with full duplex over SM fibre) for WAN connections
- so SIOCWANDEVICE is ok. Not sure about TR, though - anyone using
it for WAN networking?

SIOCDEVICE^WSIOCWANDEVICE of course has sub-ioctls as well. It is
obviously impossible without them.

I do _not_ want to fight any ETHTOOL vs SIOCDEVICE etc. battle here.
What I want is creating the best interface for controlling network
devices. Including Token Ring and Ethernet, unless there are valid
reasons to do otherwise.

I think we should concentrate on the interface first, then I will
patch the HDLC implementation.

If we're here... maybe we should really drop using the ifreq structure
and _replace_ it with better one (variable-sized)? It can be done
gradually, as both are quite compatible.

This isn't for "raw" protocol. It's for raw _HDLC_ (or "just" HDLC),
so I think a better name is still hdlc_proto.

I want to avoid such a union, because it's possible some of future member
structs will be large.

And here. It's currently impossible, as if_settings must be 16 bytes long
at most. Unless, of course, we have a variable-sized ifreq.

hdlc with address and command unspecified looks "raw" to me.
-> raw_hdlc ?

Sure, but its raw HDLC and not just "raw". By HDLC I mean flags, CRCs,
bit stuffing etc (for async transmission at least).
