I'll again push back on these magic numbers.
At the very least you should be mentioning in the cover letter log why
you _aren't_ making that change.
Just reposting and hoping it slips by the person making the comment
isn't too cool.
Why can't qcom update the python? script that generates this code to
enumerate fields instead of magic numbers here ?
I get you don't want to do it but, just ignoring the review feedback is
no OK.
What gives ?

Hi Bryan,
I haven't ignored your comments & already responded to your earlier comment on why the bit fields are not
defined. Most of these values are static settings we get from PLL HW team and we program them only once
as is during bootup and are never reused again anywhere from PLL code, so these bits are not defined.

That's not in your overview letter so generally I'd advise to include
things like "did X because Y" - "didn't do Q because Z" anyway, how does
it make a difference if the values are static ?
They are no less magic numbers that way.
What exactly is the resistance to defining the bits ?
I'll state again - when a vendor is submitting something upstream where
that vendor 100% controls their own documentation - there's no reason at
all to be presenting magic hex numbers - even more the case with
generated code.
Just update the script to enumerate the bit fields, I honestly don't get
the aversion.

Hi Bryan,
There’s no standard interface for these bits, and bit definitions/fields vary across PLL types.
So, common macros aren’t feasible and would need redefinitions per controller. Since these bits
are not reused elsewhere, IMO directly using values from the hardware documentation keeps the
implementation simpler, avoids unnecessary abstraction, and makes debugging—through direct
comparison with the hardware spec easier.
Thanks,
Jagadeesh

How are hex values in upstream code easier to debug ?
Without the spec you can't change or understand hex values in upstream
code, which is the whole point I'm making here.

I get the 'understanding' part, but regarding change, as I said
previously, these must remain as-is - any difference for a PLL
impacts every single clock downstream of it. Some of them also
correspond to specific electrical properties, just like with PHY
init sequences. The existing values are a result of tuning and
silicon validation across presumably many, many chip units.
There may be updates (very rarely post the chip going into
production), but I'd assume these would go through the same
testing procedures

The discussion makes me wonder, should we drop various _mask and _val
bits from the struct alpha_pll_config and use .user_ctl_val as it's done
for the new PLL types? Using both potentially creates inconsistencies.

That's an argument against changing the values, not naming the values.
Hexwork in upstream code is a public black box and should be avoided
where possible.
How about, take these fixed hex but someone on the clock-side in qcom
agrees to update the script to write defined bitfields not hexwork in
future deliveries. AFAIU its a script that mostly spits out these clock
descriptors so, it should be possible to fix that script once @ source,
without committing to fixing everything _currently_ in flight.
Qcom can then at its leisure update old controller descriptors by
running the script again.

Thanks for the suggestion, Bryan. We should probably skip adding these
definitions because the approach just doesn't scale across our various
PLL architectures. The bitfields vary widely between different flavors
of alpha PLLs, and the SW driver doesn't interact with these fields
post-initialization anyway.
Even if we generate them through scripts, it provides no practical
benefit. The field names aren't meaningful to the end user, and the
software never decodes these bits at any stage beyond the core PLL bits
we already have defined.
I recommend leaving them as simple fixed hex values. This keeps the code
straightforward and perfectly aligns with the format our hardware team
uses to pass these values to us.
